GBARC Meeting Minutes October 2012

Meeting Date:
October 1, 2012
Meeting Location:
Main Fire Station, 1111 Church St., Beloit, WI.
President Chuck, WD9BB, called the meeting to order at 7:03 pm.  Attendance:  26.  Visitors were welcomed.  Introductions were made of all attending.    WB5MSB from Alabama and Beloit was a guest.   Minutes of the September meeting were read and approved.  Al, KC9QQO, presented the Treasurer's Report; it was approved.
Old Business:  Yahoo Groups has some Field Day photos of the club.  You must become a member of Yahoo Groups to view them.   Al, KC9QQO, announced that we need some new club business cards for promoting the club.   He will revise the cards, checking for errors.  The cost will be in the $50 range; this includes dual side printing and color.
Doug, W9PN, will work on updating the club bylaws.  These will be available for discussion soon.
New Business:  Interest in learning the International Morse code (CW) was expressed.  W9PN, Doug offered to start a class for those interested.  Code practice is available from "on the air" stations like the ARRL ham station, W1AW.  Computer generated code practice is also popular.   The need for more publicity for our annual Field Day was discussed.    A couple of announcements were in the Beloit paper, but more could be done with the Janesville paper.  At least one article appeared in the Janesville Gazette after our Field Day.  Some had hoped to see more visitors at the site.
Program:  Club Auction Time!   N9GQ, Dave served as the Host and Auctioneer; while Al, KC9QQO was the Recorder.    Auction items included:  Interface units for computer to ham transceiver, soldering irons and supplies, handitalkies, telegraph keys, coax lengths, test equipment and miscellaneous electronic parts.   A special present was given to all attendees by Rob Best, KC9LGS and Dan Welch, KC9LGR of Whitewater.  They presented each person a digital readout, "Inside/Outside Caliper" made by their company.   It will measure from to 0 to 6 inches using a 3 digit LCD display.  It is switchable to display millimeters.    It is a very convient tool for electronic construction.   A good time was had by all.
Our next club meeting is November 5th.    The meeting was adjourned at 8:35 pm.
Bonus:   And extra 15 minute optional session started immediately.  It was a short presention of LT-Spice by Rob and Dan.  This is a circuit simulation program.  It is used to design electronic circuits, and to understand and optimize the circuit even before it is constructed.  It is available from Linear Technologies and is free.   The circuit used for the discussion was a "chirping bird"; simulated by two interacting oscillators.   Very nice.
